Carr Hill Leaders Tag Festival

Thursday 1st July saw the culmination of the Carr Hill Rugby Leaders Programme of TAG Rugby. As part of a joint initiative between the RFU and the Wyre & Fylde SSP, nine Year 10 pupils from Carr Hill High School were given tutoring on aspects of coaching, refereeing and festival organisation by local RFU Community Rugby Coach, Greg Hodgkinson. This gave the pupils the skills needed to expand the game into their local cluster Primary Schools and an opportunity for more children to play the game.

Over a period of 4 weeks, local children from cluster Primary Schools, Kirkham St. Michaels, Kirkham & Wesham and Weeton St.Michaels attended TAG rugby coaching sessions organised and run by the Rugby Leaders. Up to 30 children came to the events and on the fourth week a festival of matches was organised.

The children were split up into 4 teams and a round robin of games ensued. The skills and abilities on show were a great testament to the Leader’s coaching sessions. Following the festival each child was given a merit certificate expertly produced by the Rugby Leaders and encouraged to continue the game within a local club.

Adam Penney, PE Teacher and Carr Hill’s SSCo, Lucy Hope witnessed the young Leaders and now they plan to involve and develop the Leaders further with many more Primary events that can benefit the school and partnership.
